The longer I spend around automated systems, the less I think speed is their biggest advantage.
Speed is easy to notice.
That I've started paying attention to is hesitation.
Not human hesitation.
System hesitation.
The moments where a payment doesn't move because something needs to be checked first.
A few months ago I would have called that unnecessary friction.
Now I'm not so sure.
While reading about how Newton approaches authorization, I realized those pauses aren't always a sign that something is wrong.
Sometimes they're the system refusing to pretend it has enough information.
That feels like a very different kind of confidence.
Not the confidence to approve everything.
The confidence to wait until the decision makes sense.
Maybe we've spent too much time treating every delay as a failure.
Some delays are simply evidence that a system knows the difference between acting quickly and acting responsibly.
I'm curious whether, as more financial decisions become automated, we'll start judging systems less by how fast they move—and more by the moments they choose not to.
