#dusk $DUSK @Dusk Last week, I revised an old contract. Only a few lines changed, but I still saved it as a new version instead of overwriting the old one. Because months later, what matters isn’t just what the contract says it’s which version was in force at the time.
I ran into the same idea while looking through Dusk’s upgrade history. PLONK V2 activated at block 3,470,360, Aegis at 3,590,904, while Boreas was tied to mainnet restart block 4,414,095. At first, I saw them as software upgrade milestones. The more I looked, the more they seemed to mark something else: where a new set of rules begins.
That’s what made versioning interesting to me. A financial blockchain shouldn’t only know which rules are running today; it should also know which rules were in force when a transaction happened in the past. The protocol can change without forcing history to change with it.
I started with a few block heights, thinking I was reading a changelog. I ended up thinking about time: software needs to evolve, but finance needs to know exactly where each set of rules took effect. A good protocol needs to know how to change but does it also need to remember exactly where each change became law? $LINK $ENA
