The story in brief:
The numbers: activation needed 55% miner signaling (1,109 of 2,016 blocks); it got ~2.5% (41–51 blocks) . Foundry, Antpool, F2pool, Viabtc all declined. Saylor and Adam Back publicly opposed.
The fork: BIP-110 nodes rejected non-signaling blocks from 961,632, splitting off a chain that mined 2 blocks then stalled. Supporters now talk about a PoW change to keep it alive — the classic death rattle.
The real risk to you — REPLAY ATTACK (pay attention):
BIP-110 has no replay protection (expected only by early Sept). Any transaction you sign/claim on the fork chain can be replayed onto mainnet, draining your real BTC.
Ledger issued a formal warning: don't claim or touch fork coins until replay protection ships. The safe move: your
$BTC sitting still = zero risk (no transaction, nothing to replay). Some Australian exchanges (Hardblock, Bitaroo) froze deposits/withdrawals preemptively.
Action: do nothing with your BTC. If you were planning a move, waiting a few days costs nothing.
Market read: BTC $64–65K, mainnet running normally; ETF inflows are the strongest since April ($850M/week, IBIT leading). This event barely moved price — it's a governance/ideology battle (money vs. data on block space), not a price battle.
Watch next:
Block 965,664 (~4 weeks out): signaling window closes — the community's final word
Whether the BIP-110 chain survives a PoW change (likely: it dies)
Coldcard incident (1,719 BTC / ~$111M lost to an entropy bug): self-custody security is the hotter theme — and it reinforces the "stillness = safety" lesson above
⚠️ Informational only, not financial advice. Hold BTC: don't accept fork coins, don't sign on unknown chains — stand still and you're safe.
