The Linea Association is a Swiss non-profit organization created to oversee the growth, development, and governance of the Linea network.
Originally incubated by a development firm, Linea is a “Layer-2” scaling solution built using zero-knowledge rollup (zkEVM) technology. But raw technology alone isn’t enough for long-term success. What matters is who controls it, how open it is, and whether the community — not just a single company — can guide its future. That’s where the Association comes in. Its role is to place control in the hands of a broader group of stakeholders: community members, developers, and other contributors.
In other words: Linea Association represents a critical step toward decentralization — turning Linea from a managed project into a community-governed protocol.
What the Association Will Do
• Manage intellectual property and treasury
The Association will hold the core intellectual property of Linea and manage its treasury. That means decisions about key protocol upgrades, funding for ecosystem growth, and resource allocation will come under a neutral umbrella rather than a corporate silo.
• Support development, growth, and decentralization
Its mission includes supporting technical development (making Linea’s zkEVM robust and secure), helping the ecosystem grow (encouraging apps, projects, and integrations), and advancing a decentralization roadmap. That may include changes such as decentralized sequencing and permissionless validators, to reduce reliance on any single operator.
• Create a governance system via token holders
The Association plans to launch a native token — LINEA — by Q1 2025. Holders of this token will have governance rights: the ability to vote, influence proposals, and shape the future of the protocol.
The governance structure is intended to include a Board of Directors, a General Assembly, a token-governance body, and an Executive Director — designed to balance technical expertise, community input, and decision-making transparency.
Where Linea Stands Now: Adoption, Growth, and Activity
Since its mainnet launch (in 2023), Linea has reportedly grown quickly. In a bit over a year the network said it processed more than 230 million transactions.
Its ecosystem also expanded sharply: what was once about 150 partner projects grew to more than 420 partners by late 2024.
This rapid growth helps underline why decentralizing control matters: as more projects, users, and activity join, keeping governance centralized could risk bottlenecks or misalignment. By giving the community a formal way to steer development, the Association aims to help ensure sustainable, inclusive growth.
