Consensys has introduced Sovereign Network Interoperability, a technology stack that lets banks, custodians and fund managers settle transactions with counterparties on other blockchain ledgers. The product was unveiled at Devcon in Mumbai. Assets stay on their home ledgers, and each step is verified with cryptographic proofs rather than a trusted intermediary.

The launch targets a long-running problem in institutional finance: firms that run separate ledgers have struggled to transact with one another without moving assets onto a shared platform or relying on bridges.

How the Technology Works

According to Consensys, the system is built so that institutions can settle securities, exchange currencies and post collateral across ledgers without bridges and without moving assets onto a shared network. The company has named four main uses:

1. Posting collateral
2. Settling tokenized securities against payment
3. Swapping currencies between banks
4. Moving idle cash in and out of tokenized money market funds

The product works with Ethereum-compatible networks today. Consensys plans to add support for @CantonNetwork ($CC) next.

Why Canton Matters

Canton is a natural next integration for an institution-focused interoperability product. Talos describes Canton as a network of networks, a modular blockchain ecosystem where financial institutions can run independent but interoperable ledgers. Developed by Digital Asset, it links sovereign ledgers through a Global Synchronizer that enables atomic transactions between applications while preserving privacy. Canton Coin (CC) is the utility token that coordinates cross-domain activity on that synchronizer, according to the same report.

The announcement comes as Consensys steps up its institutional focus. CEO @mkriak and Rob Dawson are scheduled to speak on cross-ledger settlement at Booth 08 on Wednesday, Nov. 4, according to TokenPost. The session will cover how institutions can keep their own ledgers while settling across them. TokenPost also reports that Consensys and ClearToken plan to develop a round-the-clock settlement service for tokenized securities and cash, a separate initiative from the Devcon session.

Consensys has not yet said which institutions will adopt the product or when Canton support will go live.
