UK just pulled off its largest crypto seizure ever — 61,000 $BTC (~$5B) tied to a Chinese Ponzi scheme that rekt 128,000+ investors for £600M between 2014-2017.

The scammer, Zhimin Qian (aka Yadi Zhang), fled China with fake docs, tried laundering through UK property + Bitcoin. Got bagged for 11+ years in November 2025.

Now the real fight begins: Who keeps the $BTC?

London High Court just ruled Chinese law applies — not English law. This makes it way harder for victims to claim the coins as theirs (vs. being treated as creditors).

If victims can't prove property rights under Chinese law? UK government pockets the entire haul. That's a multi-billion dollar windfall for public finances.

Victims are appealing. Law firm Fieldfisher is pushing back. But unless they can prove ownership under Chinese legal framework, the state wins.

This is what happens when billions in $BTC sit in legal limbo. Governments love it.
