The largest crypto seizure in UK history just took a decisive legal turn.

The UK High Court ruled on Oct 12 (UK time) that property claims over 61,000+ bitcoins tied to the Tianjin Lantian Gerui illegal fundraising case — run by Qian Zhimin — will be judged under Chinese law, not English law. Caixin reported the judgment on Oct 13 (Beijing time).

The catch: roughly 16,000 Chinese victims in the UK recovery proceedings may now only get back principal plus interest — missing out on bitcoin's huge appreciation since the 2018 Hampstead seizure. Mr Justice Turner left the content of Chinese law to later proceedings.

Takeaway: in cross-border crypto recovery, which country's law applies decides who captures the upside.

Not financial advice.
