Sometimes we think that making a cleaner environment requires a large group, a big event, or a huge amount of effort. But today, I reminded myself that change can begin with something much simpler: starting with the place where we live.
For this Clean Up Day, I decided not to wait for someone else to organize a cleanup. I took about an hour to clean around my building and the surrounding area by myself. It may not have been a huge project, but it was something I could personally do, and I believe small actions are still meaningful when we choose to take responsibility for our surroundings.
As I started collecting the waste, I noticed how much ordinary plastic and other rubbish can accumulate in places we pass every day. Plastic bottles, snack wrappers, plastic bags, and other discarded items had slowly become part of the scenery. We can become so used to seeing rubbish around us that we stop noticing it.
That is one of the reasons I wanted to participate in
I wanted to do something practical rather than simply talk about having a cleaner environment. So I picked up the waste around my building and nearby surroundings and collected it into a bag. Looking at the waste afterward made me think about how every single piece of rubbish has to go somewhere. If each person ignores just one piece of trash, those individual pieces eventually become a much bigger problem for the whole community.
🌱 A cleaner environment starts with personal responsibility.
We don’t always need to do something extraordinary. Sometimes it can be as simple as not throwing rubbish on the ground, picking up something that has been left behind, keeping the area around our homes clean, reducing unnecessary plastic use, or encouraging the people around us to take better care of shared spaces.
I also believe that community begins at home. Before expecting our city or neighborhood to become cleaner, we can start by looking at the environment immediately around us. When one person takes action, another person may notice and feel encouraged to do the same.
Today, I was that person for my own surroundings.
The photo I’m sharing shows the bag of waste I collected during the cleanup. It may look like just ordinary rubbish, but for me it represents something more important: the decision to stop walking past the problem and actually do something about it.
🤝 I hope this campaign encourages more people to look around their own surroundings and ask themselves, “What small thing can I do today?”
We don’t have to wait for a perfect opportunity or for hundreds of people to join us. We can start individually. And when many individuals make the same choice, those small efforts can grow into a collective movement.
