Difference between crypto and Web3
— they're related but distinct concepts.
What is Crypto?
Crypto (short for cryptocurrency) is digital money powered by blockchain technology. It's the asset or currency itself.
Examples:
$BTC Bitcoin, Ethereum, stablecoins like USDT
Key features:
Decentralized, peer-to-peer transactions
No need for banks or intermediaries
Secured by cryptography and blockchain
What is Web3?
Web3 is the next generation of the internet, built on blockchain and decentralized technologies. It's the ecosystem and philosophy.
Key features:
User ownership — You truly own your digital assets and data, not platforms
Decentralization — No single company controls everything
Trustlessness — You don't need to trust intermediaries; code enforces agreements
Interoperability — Different apps and platforms can work together seamlessly
Examples of Web3: DeFi (decentralized finance), NFTs, DAOs, decentralized social networks, tokenized real-world assets (RWA)
The Relationship:
Think of it this way:
Crypto = the fuel (
$BTC Bitcoin,
$ETH Ethereum, tokens)
Web3 = the engine (the internet infrastructure powered by crypto)
You can have crypto without Web3 (just using Bitcoin to send money), but Web3 needs crypto to function.
Why Web3 Matters:
I believe Web3's core value is giving users true ownership and control of their digital lives. This is fundamentally different from Web2, where big tech companies own your data.
