Just now, another public blockchain has pulled the plug: Qubic urgently halted the entire network after wallets were drained en masse⛔
The sequence of events unfolded quickly: Between 7:42 and 9:26 a.m. Beijing time on October 18, in just 104 minutes, attackers emptied 1,404 wallets and made off with around 2.94 trillion QU, worth approximately $1.3–1.4 million at the time.
The problem wasn’t with the blockchain itself, but with insufficient randomness in the “mnemonic/seed generation” process, making the seeds easy for attackers to guess. The official list of high-risk seeds includes those:
🔹 Created in any browser on an iPhone or iPad before October 18
🔹 Created in Safari on a Mac before October 18
🔹 Created with the Qubic iOS app before July 2025
The emergency response was also unusual:
🔹 Nodes urgently halted at block height 85,371,949, freezing 87.1% of the stolen funds on-chain
🔹 The remaining 12.9% was transferred to an exchange and frozen within about an hour; multiple exchanges have suspended deposits and withdrawals
🔹 The seed-generation vulnerability was fixed in version 4.26.4, and node operators will vote on how to handle the funds
I think the two most important things to discuss are:
1️⃣ No matter how secure a wallet is, if you skimp on seed randomness, your private key is basically exposed
2️⃣ Being able to halt the chain with one click and freeze funds protected users this time, but it also shows that a small number of nodes can bring the entire chain to a stop
A reminder: The official team will never DM you first, ask for your seed phrase, or charge a “recovery fee.” Anyone popping up now offering to “help you get your funds back” is almost certainly part of a second wave of scams.
Which matters more to you: “being able to halt the chain in an emergency” or “decentralization that no one can shut down”?
