Holy crap, did MSCI really kick Strategy out? 😱
Breaking news: Global index giant MSCI has completed its consultation on “non-operating companies,” and the conclusion is that Saylor’s Strategy ($MSTR ) will be removed from MSCI indexes.
A few things to watch 👇
🔹 Reason: Companies like Strategy, which mainly make money by hoarding $BTC rather than through traditional business operations, are classified as “non-operating companies.”
🔹 Timing: The final list is reportedly due on November 11, with the change taking effect at the close on November 30.
🔹 Funds: JPMorgan previously estimated that if it’s removed, index-tracking passive funds may have to sell around $2.8 billion worth.
🔹 After-hours reaction: MSTR fell about 4% at one point, while BTC dipped only around 0.5%.
🔹 Wider impact: “Bitcoin treasury companies” such as Japan’s Metaplanet are also on the watchlist.
Put simply, index funds “follow the list”—if a name is removed, they have to sell mechanically, regardless of the company’s fundamentals.
Here’s the question: Could passive fund selling in MSTR indirectly drag down BTC? Or could the news being priced in actually make this a buying opportunity? Let’s discuss in the comments 👇
