Fundstrat's Head of Cryptocurrency Strategy Responds to "Internal Divergence of Views": Different Client Focus, Still Bullish on BTC and ETH Hitting New Highs This Year

Sean Farrell, the Head of Cryptocurrency Strategy at Fundstrat, a fund under Tom Lee, published a response regarding "the divergence between his market views and those of Tom Lee" stating,

"Fundstrat has several analysts, each with their own independent research frameworks and different investment time horizons, aimed at meeting various clients' investment objectives. My research primarily focuses on portfolios with a high allocation to crypto assets and adopts a relatively more aggressive market operation strategy.

Tom Lee's research mainly serves large asset management institutions and investors who allocate 1%-5% of their assets to BTC and ETH. Such strategies require a high level of discipline and a long-term perspective to grasp structural (long-term) trends to achieve excess returns over time. My goal is to assist clients and subscribers with a high allocation to crypto assets (approximately 20% or more) by actively rebalancing to consistently outperform the market across different cycles.

My more cautious viewpoint in the first half of the year reflects risk management rather than a complete bearish outlook. The current market pricing is nearly perfect, but risks still exist, including government shutdowns, trade volatility, uncertainty in artificial intelligence capital expenditures, and changes in Federal Reserve leadership, alongside a tightening spread in high-yield bonds and low cross-asset volatility. Recent fund flows have also shown divergence.

Bitcoin is currently in a "no man's land" in terms of valuation. In the long term, as major brokerages join, ETF demand should improve, but it still faces pressures from original holders selling, miner stress, potential exclusion of MSTR from MSCI, and fund redemptions in the short term.

My baseline judgment: a rebound may occur early in the year, followed by another correction in the first half, providing more attractive opportunities for year-end positioning. If my judgment is incorrect, I prefer to wait for confirmation signals. For investors paying attention to this outlook, I still expect Bitcoin and Ethereum to challenge new historical highs before the end of the year, thus ending the traditional four-year cycle with a shorter and smaller bear market."
