Chapter One: Trapped Beast
In the winter of his thirty-fifth year, Lin Chuan lived on the top floor of an old apartment building on the outskirts of the city.
The roof leaked, and a yellowish ring of damp stains lingered forever in the corners. Wind slipped through the gaps in the window frames, making the curtains billow in and out. His wife, Zhou Ning, slept in the inner room with their eight-year-old son. Lin Chuan sat at a folding table in the living room, two secondhand monitors in front of him and three overdue bills pinned beneath one corner.
He had no job.
Over the past seven years, he had delivered parcels, worked in sales, and handled dispatch at a logistics park. Then he heard that with gold CFDs, you didn’t have to buy physical gold or wait for delivery; you only had to predict whether international gold prices would rise or fall to take part in major market moves with a small margin. People told him it didn’t take a degree or a privileged background. Get it right just once, and even an ordinary person could change their fate.
