Orthodox Easter Truce Falters as Russia and Ukraine Exchange Prisoners
Despite a negotiated 32-hour ceasefire to mark Orthodox Easter, both Russia and Ukraine have reported significant violations of the truce. Ukrainian military officials recorded over 400 breaches, including drone strikes and shelling, while Russian governors in the Kursk and Belgorod border regions reported injuries to civilians following Ukrainian drone activity.
However, the day was also marked by a significant humanitarian breakthrough. Mediated by the United Arab Emirates, both nations conducted a major prisoner exchange, with 175 servicemen and seven civilians returned to each side. International attention now shifts to Hungary’s pivotal election this Sunday. The outcome could fundamentally alter European support for Kyiv, as a change in leadership may unblock a vital €90bn EU loan currently stalled by the Orbán administration.
