[US consumer regulator considers applying electronic banking law to cryptocurrencies] Golden Finance reported that the top US consumer financial protection agency is considering applying the Electronic Funds Transfer Act (EFTA) to cryptocurrencies to protect consumers from fraudulent cryptocurrency transfers. Rohit Chopra, director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), said in a speech at a payment conference held by the Brookings Institution think tank on October 6 that the agency is considering applying EFTA to "private digital dollars and other virtual currencies." Chopra said that in order to reduce the harm of errors, hacking and unauthorized transfers, the CFPB is exploring providing additional guidance to market participants to answer their questions about the applicability of the Electronic Funds Transfer Act to private digital dollars and other virtual currencies.
