• Bitwise CIO Matt Hougan named Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana and Chainlink as four essential long-term holdings on Monday.
• Hougan's 90/10 split places 10% of a portfolio in Bitcoin and hard assets such as gold.
• Hougan said mainstream adoption of the split could lift Bitcoin's price into the hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Bitwise chief investment officer Matt Hougan has picked Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), Solana (SOL) and Chainlink (LINK) as the four cryptocurrencies a long-term portfolio needs, presenting them as a hedge against falling fiat purchasing power and as the assets set to lead the tokenization of finance. Hougan laid out the lineup on the NewEra Finance podcast, in remarks aired on Monday. His diagnosis: traditional stock and bond portfolios face two currents at once, the erosion of fiat currencies and the migration of financial assets onto tokenized rails. Government debt is surging and spending keeps expanding, he argued, and purchasing power drains away as a result, leaving conventional portfolios exposed. The defensive answer is the strategy he described as the “Debasement Trade”, whose core holdings are Bitcoin and gold. The numbers in his scenario are explicit. If an allocation that keeps 90% of a portfolio in fiat-based assets and puts the remaining 10% into Bitcoin and hard assets such as gold becomes mainstream, he said, large-scale capital would flow into Bitcoin and its price could reach the hundreds of thousands of dollars. He called Bitcoin the cryptocurrency with the strongest risk-adjusted return and expects its standing as a store of value to harden further. The argument rests on mechanics rather than sentiment: Bitcoin's proof-of-work issuance schedule caps new supply no matter how much fiat the system creates, the exact property a debasement hedge requires. That places the position closer to a HODL discipline than to a tactical trade, and in the same demand lane as the corporate strategic Bitcoin reserve adoption built up across recent Bitcoin market cycles. The scenario states a condition, not a date: the inflows arrive if the allocation spreads, and not before.
The Tokenization Side of the Call
Where the debasement argument is defensive, Hougan's second track is a bet on infrastructure. To ride the tokenization of financial assets, which he expects to reshape markets over the next ten years, he judged the inclusion of Ethereum, Solana and Chainlink in a portfolio essential. The framing treats the three as plumbing: smart-contract layers where tokenized assets settle, plus the oracle connectivity that feeds data into those systems. He added that Hyperliquid, a high-speed trading platform for financial assets, carries the potential to join that group. The split is therefore by purpose rather than by market capitalization: Bitcoin answers currency risk, the infrastructure trio answers tokenization. The outlook extended past infrastructure. Hougan was positive on assets that pair privacy with artificial intelligence, naming Zcash (ZEC) as a core privacy pillar and Venice as the front-runner in practical, real-world AI integration. The advice attached to these picks was procedural. Short-term price volatility, he cautioned, is a poor guide; investors should instead examine each project's revenue structure and token supply mechanics closely, the analysis he expects to separate long-term winners from the rest. Bitcoin itself sits oddly inside the tokenization theme. Every asset he named for it is a smart-contract platform, and the main route Bitcoin's value takes into tokenized markets today runs through representations such as wrapped Bitcoin on other chains, which keep the underlying asset parked while claims on it trade elsewhere, a structure the market uses because Bitcoin's own base layer does not run these contracts. Stablecoins and tokenization, in his reading, will decide the crypto market's qualitative growth over the coming years. Whether a shift in traditional finance allocation can drive a long rally across major altcoin assets is the question the market is now watching.
What the 10% Split Requires
The scenario is conditional, and the condition does most of the work. A 10% mainstream allocation is not a forecast of near-term flows; it is a threshold portfolio practice has not yet crossed. Nothing in the appearance names a timeline, a date or a level short of the hundreds-of-thousands range. The debasement half has corroboration in the institutional and reserve demand already accumulated, while the tokenization half depends on execution across Ethereum, Solana and Chainlink infrastructure and on a still-early Bitcoin DeFi footprint. The call also lands against a soft tape: Monday's $65.4 million ETF outflow shows institutional demand ebbing even as the long case builds, and one analyst house still projects a June 2027 reclaim of the $126,000 record high. Hougan drew no invalidation level for the thesis, so the reading stays open until the 10% allocation either spreads or does not.
