SK hynix employees are moving toward the creation of a company-wide union that would bring production and office workers under a single organization, potentially reshaping the balance of power in negotiations with management.

More than 4,000 employees have reportedly joined an organizing group, while organizers have submitted an application to establish the new independent union. The initiative would challenge the company’s existing three-union structure, which is divided across worker groups and locations.

At the center of the dispute is SK hynix’s profit-sharing bonus system. Workers have pushed back against proposed changes that could see part of the bonus paid in company shares, with restrictions on when those shares could be sold. Employees argue that tying compensation to the stock price could introduce uncertainty into what they view as an agreed benefit.

The proposed unified union could give workers greater bargaining leverage as wage and bonus negotiations continue. If it succeeds in becoming the representative negotiating body, the development could materially change future labor-management talks at one of South Korea’s most important semiconductor companies.

What began as a dispute over bonuses is now developing into a much broader fight over how SK hynix workers will negotiate with management.
