AAA backs legal protocol for AI agents

The American Arbitration Association just launched the Legal Context Protocol — an open standard giving AI agents a legal framework for commerce. Google, IBM, Circle, and Stellar Development Foundation are founding contributors.

Gartner projects agentic AI payments will hit 15 trillion by 2028. But current legal infrastructure — click-throughs and terms of service — was built for humans, not machine-to-machine deals. LCP changes that by making terms, consent, and dispute resolution discoverable when agents transact on behalf of organizations.

The protocol doesn't require a blockchain and complements existing payment rails like x402 and Machine Payments Protocol. It answers three critical questions: under what terms, governed by what law, and with what recourse each transaction occurred.

With 100 years of dispute resolution experience, AAA lending weight to this standard signals that agentic commerce is moving from concept to infrastructure. The legal gap was the last major blocker for institutional AI agent adoption.
