OPENING
Alipay says it does not support crypto trading after P2P platform Peer launched an Alipay channel for buying and selling USDC.
KEY DETAILS
- Alipay's official X account said on October 28, 2026 that Alipay does not support virtual currency (crypto) trading or related services, and that claims Alipay enables crypto purchases on third-party platforms are false and unauthorized.
- Alipay reminded users to exercise caution to protect their funds and account safety.
- Alipay's statement was a reply to P2P on/off-ramp platform Peer, which announced on October 27 that Alipay was live on Peer in beta, letting users buy USDC by paying a seller in Chinese yuan or sell USDC and get paid in yuan on Alipay.
- Peer's own documentation states that it has no official partnership with Alipay.
WHY IT MATTERS
China's top payment apps are still distancing themselves from crypto on-ramps. (Analysis, not a confirmed fact.)
IMPORTANT CONTEXT
- On Peer, sellers lock USDC in an onchain contract and buyers pay them directly in yuan through Alipay; the USDC is released once the payment is verified.
- Alipay did not say what action, if any, it would take against accounts used for such trades.
