The crypto Fear & Greed Index fell from 50 to 28 in a single day — from neutral straight into fear. That 22-point drop is one of the fastest sentiment swings of the year. Here is what the number actually means, and what it does not.

What happened on 6 November 2026

$BTC traded at $76,087.90, down 5.49% in 24 hours, after falling from above $80,000 to a low near $75,369. $ETH fell harder, down 7.70% to $2,238.01. Nine of the top 10 coins fell. Total market cap dropped 7.84% to about $2.57 trillion, and around $1.09 billion in positions were liquidated in 24 hours, mostly longs.

The trigger came from outside crypto: the Nasdaq fell 5.52% on 5 November as US tech stocks sold off, and the risk-off mood spilled into crypto overnight. US jobs data (nonfarm payrolls) is due later today, 6 November, and traders are watching it for the next move in rate expectations.

What the index measures

The Fear & Greed Index scores market sentiment from 0 to 100, built from volatility, trading volume, social media activity, surveys, Bitcoin dominance and search trends:

• 0–24: Extreme Fear

• 25–49: Fear

• 50: Neutral

• 51–75: Greed

• 76–100: Extreme Greed

At 28, the market is in fear — but not extreme fear. Yesterday it sat at 50, exactly neutral. The crowd went from undecided to scared in one session.

What it does NOT mean

• It is not a buy or sell signal. Fear can last for days, and prices can keep falling while the index stays low.

• It is not a prediction. It is a snapshot of how the crowd feels right now, not where prices go next.

• It does not measure value. A fearful market can still be expensive, and a greedy market can still rise.

What to watch next

• Analysts are watching the $75,000–$76,000 area for Bitcoin, the zone it fell toward on 6 November.

• Ethereum falling further than Bitcoin in one day shows short-term risk appetite is weak.

• Two possibilities, not predictions: if today's US jobs data calms rate fears, risk appetite could steady; if it adds pressure, the fear reading could deepen further.

The takeaway: a 22-point one-day drop is a sentiment shock, not a verdict. Read the index as "the crowd is scared" — not as "buy now" and not as "sell now".

When the index drops into fear, what do you check first — the price, the news, or nothing at all?
