Core Scientific to Exit Bitcoin Mining by Year-End, Focus on Colocation

Core Scientific has announced its plan to exit Bitcoin mining by the end of this year. The company's management confirmed this during their third-quarter earnings call, showing a big shift in their business strategy. By year-end, they aim to focus solely on colocation services, which have already seen substantial growth. As of September 30, colocation revenue reached $215.4 million, accounting for about 92% of their total revenue of $232.9 million.

In contrast, self-mining has taken a sharp downturn, with revenue plummeting 79% from a year earlier to just $12.3 million. This decline comes as the company reduces its mining fleet by nearly half, repurposing resources for AI and high-performance computing workloads. The shift reflects broader industry trends where public miners are pivoting towards more lucrative data center operations.

This transition matters for the crypto market as it shows a growing focus on colocation services over traditional Bitcoin mining. As Core Scientific prepares to finalize its exit, the impact on Bitcoin supply dynamics and market confidence in mining operations will be closely watched, especially as the company aims to present a clearer financial picture moving forward.
