Power Outage Hits Washington DC As Smoke Rises From Underground

A major electrical disruption has struck parts of downtown Washington, D.C., leaving more than 1,100 customers without power as smoke was reported coming from multiple underground manholes.

The outage affected the Foggy Bottom area, near George Washington University and the U.S. State Department, with Pepco investigating a possible substation failure.

What makes this especially concerning is the underground electrical trouble in an area surrounded by major government buildings and international institutions. The incident has raised questions about the vulnerability of aging electrical infrastructure in the nation’s capital.
