Deep Inside An Iranian Salt Mine, A Man From 1,700 Years Ago Was Found Almost Perfectly Preserved In the Chehrabad Salt Mine, miners uncovered the naturally mummified remains of a man dating back to the ancient Sasanian period.
Known today as the “Salt Man of Iran,” the individual was preserved not by burial rituals, but by the mine’s extreme salt conditions, which removed moisture and slowed decomposition for nearly 1,700 years. When discovered, the man still had visible hair, a beard, facial features, and even a gold earring.
Researchers also found knives, textiles, and personal items beside the body, offering a rare glimpse into daily life in ancient Persia. Archaeologists later uncovered additional preserved individuals at the site, collectively known as the Salt Men of Iran — one of the most extraordinary archaeological discoveries ever found in a mining environment.
