$BTC The biggest crypto heist in history just happened — and it shook the entire market in hours.
On Thursday, 30 October 2026, Binance, the world's largest crypto exchange by daily volume, confirmed a security breach with an estimated total impact of around $6.3 billion, making it the largest reported breach in crypto history.
What Actually Happened?
Binance's initial investigation suggests the incident started not with a wallet private key leak, but with a compromised laptop belonging to a DevOps engineer. The attacker allegedly gained access to a service container and submitted unauthorized withdrawal transactions.
The exchange was quick to state: “We have found no evidence of any wallet private key leak”, and that a detailed technical post-mortem will follow.
The attack was identified on October 29, triggering an international freeze effort.
The Numbers Are Staggering
Estimated impact: $6.3B — Binance's own estimate
Verified frozen so far: ∼$3 billion on-chain
Chainalysis estimate: $5.9B actually stolen at the time
TRM Labs estimate: $6.36B
Stablecoin issuers moved fast:
Tether froze >$1.5B in USDT linked to the hack
Circle froze >$800M in USDC
Binance co-founder Yi He and former chief Changpeng Zhao both acknowledged the incident. Zhao posted on X that it “does look like a hack on Binance” and said user funds would be covered. Binance officially said it will cover all losses.
Who Is Behind It?
Blockchain intelligence firm TRM Labs attributes the attack to TraderTraitor, North Korea's elite state-sponsored hacking unit, based on robust on- and off-chain intelligence. Cybersecurity analysts also suspect North Korea's TraderTraitor is behind the attack.
If confirmed, this would be Pyongyang's largest crypto heist to date, surpassing the Ronin Bridge $625M hack.
Market Impact: Instant Bloodbath
The news triggered immediate panic selling:
Bitcoin fell below $79,000 on Thursday, briefly dropping under $77,000, down ∼3.2%
ETH, BNB, XRP, SOL all down 5-8% as shown in your banner
$1.53 Billion in liquidations in 24 hours as leveraged longs were wiped out
BNB was hit hardest initially, plunging nearly 10% before recovering to +2.7% as Binance reassured users.
What Binance Did Next
Suspended all deposits and withdrawals temporarily
Coordinated with law enforcement, blockchain intelligence firms and industry partners to freeze assets
Moved funds to an intermediary frozen wallet
Why This Changes Everything
This is not just another exchange hack. It's a supply-chain + insider device compromise — not a smart contract bug.
Hot wallet security is still the weakest link. Even with no private key leak, container-level access was enough.
Centralized exchange risk is back in focus after years of "self-custody" narrative.
Stablecoin freeze power proved crucial. Without Tether and Circle, losses would be far higher — but it also raises decentralization debates.

What should users do now?
Don't panic-move funds during suspension — wait for official Binance resume notice
Enable passkeys + hardware 2FA, rotate API keys
For large holdings, keep majority in cold self-custody, not on any exchange
