Zcash's Crosslink proposal is lighting up X, and the reaction says a lot about how sensitive PoW communities are to the word "staking."

What it is: Crosslink keeps Zcash's proof-of-work mining but adds a staking layer (tied to the shielded Orchard pool) to give blocks faster, irreversible finality and harden the chain against reorgs. Slow finality has been a real pain point for exchanges and bridges dealing with $ZEC deposits.

What it is NOT, at least yet: Shielded Labs' Jason McGee stressed it's still an R&D prototype running on testnets, with no mainnet plan. Any change would need broad community consensus.

My take: hybrid PoW + PoS finality is a pragmatic design, not a betrayal of mining. Miners keep producing blocks; stakers add a checkpoint on top. The open questions are who stakes, how much shielded ZEC gets locked, and whether it adds new attack surface. Those answers matter more than the headline.

Market context: $ZEC trades around $1,230 on Binance, up ~5.9% in 24h, with ~$117M in quote volume. Narrative is active, but a testnet prototype is not a shipped upgrade, so I'd treat governance headlines as volatility, not confirmation.

Watching for: a formal ZIP, testnet stats, and miner/staker feedback.
