Albuquerque, New Mexico’s ban on cryptocurrency ATMs and counter-assisted crypto transactions has taken effect, requiring affected businesses to stop operating immediately and remove devices by December 5. According to Odaily, the city’s virtual currency ordinance bars merchants, landlords, property owners and retailers from operating crypto ATMs or providing space for them. Violators may face fines of $500 per day, loss of their business licenses or closure of their businesses. The ordinance does not restrict residents from legally holding or mining cryptocurrency, trading through online exchanges, or transferring it privately through digital wallets. The U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission said reported losses from cryptocurrency ATM scams exceeded $388 million in 2025.
