🚨 🔐 RUSSIA’S 2027 CRYPTO CRACKDOWN: WILL SELF-CUSTODY SURVIVE? 🔐 🚨

Imagine owning your crypto, holding your private keys, and still being restricted from moving your assets where you choose.

Russia’s Bank of Russia is tightening the rules around cryptocurrency transactions. From July 1, 2027, Russian residents will face restrictions requiring most crypto transactions to pass through authorized intermediaries, while transfers between individuals and movements to self-custody wallets are restricted under the new framework.

The distinction matters: this is not simply a ban on owning Bitcoin. Russia is building a regulated crypto market, but with tighter control over how residents trade and transfer digital assets.

The intended direction is clear: bring activity into licensed exchanges and brokers, improve oversight, and make transactions easier for authorities to monitor. The trade-off is less financial independence for users who prefer controlling their own wallets.

My Take: The real battle is not crypto versus government. It is self-custody versus intermediary-controlled access.

If users must rely on approved platforms, compliance rules, account restrictions, and withdrawal policies become central risks. Yet tighter regulation does not automatically eliminate peer-to-peer activity or guarantee that every user will migrate to licensed services.

For global crypto investors, the bigger question is whether other jurisdictions will adopt similar controls—or take a different path that preserves self-custody while enforcing compliance at regulated entry and exit points.

Crypto ownership means more than holding an asset; it also means having practical control over it.

Should governments prioritize regulated access, or protect the right to move crypto into a wallet you control?
