Zcash’s proposed NU7 upgrade could stop funds in its legacy Sprout pool from being spent—even if holders still have their private keys.

This concerns Sprout funds, not a blanket freeze on every $ZEC wallet.

The mechanism is explained in ZIP 2003: Sprout spending requires version-4 transactions, which the proposal would disallow from NU7 onward. The official document still lists its status as Draft.

The useful lesson: holding a private key and being able to transact are different things. A key authorizes a transaction; network rules determine whether it is accepted.

The next milestone is confirmation of activation details. Until then, “Zcash has frozen funds” overstates the facts.
