Watched one of the research agents stall again last night. It had the three feeds already, model call done, then the last API returned 402. Retried once. Sat there. Queue light just blinked. Human was offline so the whole job froze over four cents.
The part that stuck was how cleanly it failed. No model error, no rate limit. Just no shared way for the service to see that the agent already carried a valid spend envelope from its owner. Everyone still has to re check identity and intent from zero or fall back to some shared key nobody wants sitting in the prompt. On $kite the same agent finishes once the session is bound budget, category, expiry, proof the service can read in one shot. The API stops treating it like a random script. I stop getting the ping.
Still wonder about the drift though. Session looks tight when you set it. An agent that starts negotiating two steps sideways can burn the allowance on something adjacent before the check fires. Verification cost is low on the small runs I’ve seen. Not obvious yet whether operators will keep those $kite sessions open once twenty of them start competing for the same endpoint. That’s the bit I want to keep watching this week.
