Google reported that its Willow quantum chip cuts errors about 40-fold when preparing the special quantum states, known as magic states, needed for calculations that could eventually threaten Bitcoin wallets. In the experiment, the chip achieved about 99.99 percent fidelity among the states that passed inspection, but only about 8 percent of preparation attempts succeeded. Researchers say the method advances work toward sustaining roughly 500,000 reliable magic states per second, a level estimated for a future quantum attack on Bitcoin under certain hardware assumptions. While the advance does not make such an attack 40 times cheaper, it addresses a key bottleneck in error‑corrected quantum computing.
