NEAR Accounts Add Post-Quantum ML-DSA Support

NEAR Protocol is taking another step toward quantum-resistant blockchain security by adding support for ML-DSA, a post-quantum digital signature algorithm standardized by NIST.

The key advantage is that users can upgrade their account authentication without moving assets to a new account. NEAR separates account identity from signing keys, making it possible to replace keys while retaining the same account and its existing assets.

ML-DSA is designed to withstand attacks from sufficiently powerful quantum computers, which could eventually threaten some cryptographic systems used by blockchains today.

NEAR’s broader roadmap includes expanding wallet support, developing NEP-655 for implicit accounts, and exploring post-quantum account recovery and cross-chain applications.

This does not mean quantum computers can currently break existing blockchain security. Instead, NEAR is preparing its infrastructure for a potential future threat.

The next thing to watch is how quickly wallet support expands and how much of NEAR’s wider infrastructure can adopt post-quantum cryptography beyond account signatures.
