⛏️ ICP’s ICGold Cycle-Mining Experiment Starts Today—But It’s Not a DFINITY Upgrade

A community project called ICGold is scheduled to begin cycle mining on the Internet Computer at 19:00 UTC today, October 10.

UPCOMING: ICGold v1.0 is listed on the Internet Computer Developer Forum as a showcase project. It is not an official DFINITY protocol upgrade or an approved network change.

So what actually changed?

ICGold plans to use cycles—computing credits backed by ICP—in a mining-style competition. The idea is to test whether community-built applications can create new demand for ICP-backed resources.

But here’s the important part: an announced start time is not proof of a successful launch. I could not independently verify that ICGold is live, assess its security, or confirm how much demand it will create.

There’s one detail worth watching: participation and sustainability. A mining-style experiment can attract short-term attention, but lasting value needs real users, credible security, and ongoing cycle demand.

That doesn’t mean ICP has a new official catalyst. It means the ecosystem is testing a new demand model—and the results, not the launch date, are what matter.
