Oct 10 — Morning Brief: altcoins running the weekend show
Weekend tape, thin books. The majors are not calling the shots today. Three altcoins worth your attention:
$NEAR near $4.93, up about 8% on the day. Not random: Bitwise's spot ETF for the token went live on Sep 29, pulled in ~$58M in week one, and the chain's cross-chain volume just crossed $30B. Now the community debates cutting max issuance from 2.5% to 1.6%. Real inflows plus a shrinking supply story. It works right up until it doesn't. Bullish read.
$ADA bounced about 5% to $0.245, but it ripped 11% earlier this week and handed nearly all of it back within two days. This smells more like shorts covering than new believers, so I want to see it hold first. Neutral here.
Then the privacy-coin corner, the softest spot on the board: one top-20 name down about 5% to $519 with no bad headline behind it, just a sector-wide selloff flushing leveraged longs. Catching the knife while a whole sector unwinds is how accounts shrink. Bearish lean.
The two majors play supporting roles: $BTC near $82.5k and the second-largest coin around $2,488, up ~1% and 0.5% off Friday's weak open, the softest in three weeks. Flows have not improved: spot ETFs for the pair bled some $964M in two days, eight straight sessions of money walking out, Fidelity's FBTC leading the exits. A Saturday bounce on light volume doesn't change that math. Also leans bearish.
How I read it: money is hiding from the majors and hunting for an actual story, and the standout has the freshest one. What matters: does it hold ~$4.7 into the week open? Hold, and this alt rotation has another chapter. Lose it, and the weekend alt party unwinds fast. If ETF redemptions return Monday, the bounce in the majors hands back whatever it gained. Macro radar: September CPI lands Wednesday, then the FOMC on Oct 27 and 28.
Not financial advice.
