South Korea's AI Stock Mania Just Jumped Straight Into Crypto — And One Token Is Capturing Most of It
South Korean retail traders have carried the same AI enthusiasm driving names like SK Hynix straight into the crypto market, and Worldcoin has become the clearest beneficiary of that shift.
Here's what the data shows: per Chainalysis's latest East Asia Crypto Adoption report, South Korea's crypto economy reached $449.1 billion over the year through June 2026, up 12.3% and the largest in East Asia, ahead of Japan's $228.3 billion and Hong Kong's $192.2 billion. By June, AI-themed tokens had become the single largest category of won-denominated trading, overtaking payment tokens like XRP — a share roughly 19.5 times higher than the equivalent AI-token share in Japan's yen market. Worldcoin (WLD) led the category decisively with $7.41 billion in trading volume, more than double the next closest token, Sahara AI's $3.2 billion, followed by Virtuals Protocol at $2.7 billion, Bio Protocol at $2 billion, and NEAR at $1.7 billion. The growth was driven almost entirely by retail activity, with Korean banks and institutions still largely confined to pilot programs.
Why does this matter? This is a clear case of a broader domestic equity narrative — Korea's AI and semiconductor-driven stock rally — spilling directly into crypto trading behavior, reshaping which tokens dominate local volume. It also highlights how thematic trading trends can concentrate heavily around a handful of names once retail conviction builds around a story.
Does this kind of cross-market narrative spillover reflect genuine conviction in AI tokens, or just retail chasing whatever theme is hottest? 🤔
