At the Ethiopia Finance Forum 2026, a parallel session on Financial Consumer Protection and Education highlighted the progress being made by the National Bank of Ethiopia to strengthen consumer protection as the financial sector expands, digitalizes, and becomes increasingly diverse.
The session opened with a presentation on NBE’s work to strengthen the financial consumer protection framework, including efforts to promote greater transparency and fair treatment, strengthen consumer recourse and complaint-handling mechanisms, advance financial education, and establish stronger safeguards for consumers of increasingly digital financial services.
The discussion emphasized that expanding access to finance must go hand in hand with ensuring that consumers understand the products they use, receive clear and transparent information, are treated fairly, and have effective avenues for recourse when problems arise.
As Ethiopia’s financial sector continues to transform, NBE is working to ensure that consumer protection evolves alongside innovation and market development, helping build a financial system that is not only more accessible, but also more responsible, trusted, and responsive to the people it serves.
