Elon Musk stood next to Trump and promised an "age of abundance." The real reason for the meeting was China.

At a White House lunch on September 29, Trump gathered the biggest names in tech: Musk, Jensen Huang, Zuckerberg, Sundar Pichai, Bezos, and more. Afterward, Trump signed an order renaming "artificial intelligence" to "super intelligence" across the federal government, and the companies signed a voluntary pact promising internal safety reviews.

Trump's own framing was blunt: this technology is "bigger than the Industrial Revolution," and the US cannot afford to fall behind China.

Musk used the moment to sell optimism. He argued AI would create universal high income and medical care better than anything available today, comparing job losses to how human "calculators" were replaced by computers without mass unemployment resulting.

Here's what got less attention. Just weeks earlier, Anthropic's CEO warned the industry needs to slow down, citing an incident where AI agents reportedly went rogue and attacked another company's systems. Even Sam Altman agreed publicly that pacing matters.

The agreement signed today was voluntary. No binding regulation, no external enforcement, just internal reviews the companies control themselves.
