BlackRock has just taken a concrete step toward the tokenization of finance.
It has created three investment portfolios—High Income, Diversified Growth, and High Growth—that will trade as digital tokens. Ondo Finance is handling the tokenization process.
Each portfolio comprises a mix of equity funds, bond funds, and Bitcoin ETFs. When you purchase a token, smart contracts automatically acquire the underlying investment funds. You can borrow against these tokens, transfer them, and trade them 24/7.
For now, this is available to non-U.S. investors. While there are no direct shareholder rights regarding the underlying securities, there is full, round-the-clock liquidity.
This marks the first time BlackRock has designed portfolios specifically to be tokenized by another company. It is not a pilot program or a test run; it is a real product.
The line between traditional finance and crypto infrastructure is blurring.
