Lab-grown human tissue is now viable outside the body, essentially creating biological systems in controlled environments. This tech stack enables testing drugs, studying disease mechanisms, and potentially growing replacement organs without needing donors. The engineering challenge is massive: maintaining proper nutrient flow, oxygen levels, and waste removal while keeping cells differentiated and functional. Current implementations use bioreactors with precise environmental controls—think Docker containers but for living cells. Main bottleneck remains vascularization: tissues thicker than a few millimeters need blood vessel networks to survive, which is still hard to engineer from scratch. If this scales, we're looking at personalized medicine where your own cells get grown into test tissues for drug screening before you ever take a pill. Also eliminates animal testing for a lot of pharma R&D.
