*Short Sellers Paid Their Tuition; BTC Retakes 85,000*
Last night when I checked the market, my first reaction wasn't excitement. It was pause.
Bitcoin retook 85,000.
For the first time in eight months, that level was seriously reclaimed. Intraday high near 86,000, close above 85,000. It wasn't an explosive pump. It was more like a big fish on the line - the line taut, the angler calm, steadily dragging it to shore.
A rough week that didn't end rough
Looking back, this week should have broken it. Hawkish Fed noise, the Clarity Act failing in the Senate, price dipping near 75,000 at one point. The "second wave of the bear market" posts were already written.
Then Friday flipped the script.
ETF net inflows hit about $433 million in a single day, with Fidelity's FBTC alone bringing in $310 million. On the other side, leverage got washed - between $630 million and $750 million in liquidations in 24 hours, shorts taking the brunt.
Price wasn't pumped up by hype. It was squeezed up.
Why this reclaim matters
When I say resilient, I don't mean it surged wildly. I mean it didn't crash when it should have.
Bad news was absorbed, and buying remained. Leveraged shorts piled higher while spot and ETFs filled the gap underneath.
The on-chain number to watch is Glassnode's average cost basis for US spot Bitcoin ETF holders: around $85,600. We're sitting right on that threshold.
If it holds, 85,000 stops being resistance and becomes a stepping stone. If not, it's another round of back-and-forth washout.
The fisherman's warning
Anyone who fishes knows: the moment a big fish leaps out of the water is when you're most likely to lose it. Not because the fish isn't big enough, but because the angler gets too eager.
85,000 looks good. Good doesn't mean chaseable.
Those who rode down from 120,000 last cycle paid the highest tuition by mistaking a rebound for the start of a new bull run. Breaking through is a fact. A new bull market is not yet the conclusion.
Next, watch three things:
*1. Can 85,000 hold as support,* or was it just a day's swim?
*2. Will ETF flows continue,* or turn into a tug-of-war of in-and-out?
*3. Is there real spot buying between 87k and 90k,* or is it just shorts covering?
My own approach hasn't changed. Positioning remains the same: guard your coins like guarding a widow. Core holdings stay put, no added leverage, no joining the hype. For OKB and X Layer, focus on ecosystem and dollar-cost averaging rhythm. Don't change plans just because BTC jumped this time.
The market will always give you numbers. The real challenge is staying put when the numbers come.
85,000 is retaken. Now let's see if it can hold overnight.
