#BuffettBecomesBerkshireChairmanEmeritus
Warren Buffett stepped down as Berkshire Hathaway's chairman on Friday, September 18, 2026, taking on the newly created role of chairman emeritus effective immediately, according to Reuters and Berkshire's own press release. He will remain a member of the Board of Directors, with the company saying he'll continue to offer his valued judgment and perspective.

Buffett's son, Howard Buffett — a Berkshire director since 1993 — was elected the new Chairman of the Board as part of the company's long-standing succession plan, per Business Wire. The move completes a leadership transition that began when Buffett, 96, handed the CEO role to longtime lieutenant Greg Abel at the start of this year, ending a run atop Berkshire that began in 1965.

In his letter to shareholders, Buffett reflected on his decades at the helm, joking that "Father Time always wins," while adding he'd been treated generously by time. Abel described Howard's role as safeguarding the culture Buffett built, distinguishing it from his own operational leadership. Buffett grew Berkshire into a roughly $1.03 trillion conglomerate spanning insurance, railroads, energy, and consumer brands.
