🇺🇸 US Senate Blocks CLARITY Act, Crypto Regulation Faces Delay
The U.S. Senate has failed to advance the CLARITY Act, a major bill aimed at establishing a clearer federal regulatory framework for digital assets in the United States.
In the September 15 procedural vote, the bill received 49 votes in favor and 50 against, falling short of the 60 votes required to move forward.
The CLARITY Act was designed to provide clearer rules for the U.S. digital-asset market, including regulatory responsibilities involving the SEC and CFTC. Supporters argued that clearer rules could reduce regulatory uncertainty for crypto businesses and investors.
The vote followed months of negotiations and multiple changes to the legislation. Disagreements remained over ethics provisions, regulatory enforcement and other crypto-related rules.
The failed vote has added uncertainty for the U.S. crypto market. Bitcoin and several major cryptocurrencies also came under pressure following the Senate decision, with XRP among the larger tokens experiencing a notable decline.
The CLARITY Act has not necessarily ended permanently, as lawmakers could reconsider the legislation in the future. For now, however, the Senate vote represents a significant delay in efforts to establish comprehensive federal crypto-market rules.
