Bilal Chughtai, a former Google DeepMind AI researcher, warned that humanity has little time left to stop AI from causing widespread harm. According to Sina Finance, he wrote on X and LinkedIn on Monday that he had seen AI development firsthand at Google and was deeply worried about its current trajectory, adding that he truly believed AI could kill everyone.
Chughtai said he worked mainly on AI safety and alignment research at DeepMind. He is the latest AI researcher to issue a severe warning about the technology, saying its capabilities are advancing without necessarily aligning with human goals and could ultimately destroy humanity.
Jacob Coxon, a junior AI developer, resigned earlier this month and accused his former employers Anthropic PBC and OpenAI of betting with lives in a race toward superintelligent AI. Over the weekend, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei published a 3,800-word essay urging the AI industry to slow development of the most advanced systems to avoid catastrophic harm if they slip beyond human control.
Amodei's call drew rare support from OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and SpaceX AI CEO Elon Musk. Chughtai said he remained optimistic that AI could still be developed safely, and that his next job would also focus on that goal. His LinkedIn profile shows he now works at the nonprofit BlueDot Impact, which provides AI safety training for people from different fields.
