According to the BBC, Hafidh Ameir Hassan, the husband of Tanzania's President Samia Suluhu Hassan, has died while receiving treatment at a hospital in Zanzibar. Vice-President Deogratius Ndejembi said Ameir had been suffering from a heart condition and announced that he died at 08:00 local time (06:00 GMT) on Monday at the Emilio Mzena Memorial Hospital.

Ndejembi said funeral arrangements are under way in Kizimkazi, a village on Zanzibar, and led tributes while conveying condolences to Samia, Ameir's family and friends. Kenyan President William Ruto said he received the news with "deep sorrow," while Zambia's President Hakainde Hichilema said his country stood with the first family and Tanzania during "this difficult time." Ameir, an agricultural academic, became Tanzania's first First Gentleman after Samia took office in 2021 and was rarely seen in public. He married Samia in 1978 and the couple had four children, including Wanu Hafidh Ameir, who serves in Zanzibar's House of Representatives in the National Assembly.
