Ontology Mainnet Remains Paused After Confirmed Attack.
Ontology’s mainnet remains offline as of September 1 after developers confirmed that the network was targeted by malicious attack activity. The blockchain was paused on August 31 as a containment measure after the team identified a potential security concern during a routine check.
Ontology says there is currently no evidence that user assets, including $ONT and $ONG were compromised. The team is using the shutdown to investigate the incident, apply remediation measures, conduct testing and undergo a third-party security review before restoring block production. Developers are targeting a possible reopening within 24 hours, but only if security checks are successfully completed.
The incident comes as other networks that experienced disruptions around the same period have already recovered. Cronos halted its network to contain a price-inflation attack involving Tectonic’s TONIC token. PeckShield estimated that the emergency response limited the loss to roughly $6 million in ETH, despite the attack initially reaching around $74 million in affected value.
Injective also experienced a 3-hour, 42-minute halt on August 31. However, claims that the outage was caused by an exploit remain unconfirmed. On-chain data showed no rollback, while neither Injective nor Upbit confirmed a breach.
For Ontology, the priority now is clear: security before speed. The network’s eventual restart will depend on whether developers and external reviewers are satisfied that the vulnerability has been addressed.
