Consensus rules transaction models, and voting logic can all be described on paper without a single line of code. None of that runs on its own, though — something has to actually execute it on real machines. That's what Rusk is.

Rusk is the Rust node implementation for the Dusk L1. It's the software that runs DuskDS consensus, keeps track of chain state, executes DuskVM contracts, and exposes the HTTP API and RUES event system that wallets, indexers, and other integrators actually connect to.

The distinction matters because architecture and implementation aren't the same layer of explanation. DuskDS is a description of what the settlement layer does. Rusk is the program that makes it happen on an actual node. When someone runs a provisioner, an archive node, or a prover, they're running Rusk — not a separate abstract version of the protocol.
