"Instant settlement" shows up in nearly every layer-1 pitch deck at this point, Dusk Network's included, to the point that the phrase has started to sound like background noise, the blockchain equivalent of a coffee shop calling its espresso artisanal. If every chain claims it, does the claim actually mean anything when Dusk Network makes it, or is it just another line in another deck.

I think it does mean something, but only if you look past the phrase to the mechanism behind it, because "instant" is doing very different work depending on the chain you are looking at. Ethereum's finality is probabilistic, generally treated as safe after roughly 12 to 15 minutes of confirmations, fast enough for most DeFi activity where a brief reorg risk is an acceptable cost to carry. Some newer chains, Solana among them, finalize in under a second but still rely on probabilistic security assumptions under the hood, meaning the number is fast without the underlying guarantee actually being absolute. Dusk Network's Succinct Attestation is built around explicit, committee-attested finality rather than probability converging toward certainty over time, which is a narrower and more specific guarantee than a fast block time alone provides.

That distinction matters far more for securities settlement than it does for swapping tokens on a decentralized exchange. A brief reorg risk is a rounding error for a token swap and a genuine legal problem for a trade that is supposed to represent final transfer of ownership in a regulated security, where a reversed block could mean a security briefly had two different owners on paper. The stereotype that every instant-settlement claim is interchangeable marketing collapses a real technical difference, one that happens to matter most exactly in the use case Dusk Network is built around.
