According to the BBC, at least 53 people were killed and about 5,000 were displaced after a 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck Indonesia's Flores island on Saturday, with aid disruptions and aftershocks worsening conditions for survivors. More than 1,000 houses have been damaged, along with dozens of health facilities, schools and government offices, while landslides have blocked roads and supplies have run low in several areas.
Hospitals in the island's west have been damaged, forcing health services into tents, and residents in Labuan Bajo and other areas have been sleeping outdoors because of fears of further collapses. Rescuers reached Nitung Village on Palue Island on Sunday night after it had been cut off for nearly two days, and local police said hundreds of homes there were severely damaged, with electricity and communications cut off.
