Every discussion around AI infrastructure eventually drifts toward faster GPUs or larger clusters. I used to assume hardware diversity was just another compatibility problem waiting to be hidden behind better software. The more I look at OpenGradient, the less certain I am. It almost feels like the protocol stops asking whether every machine should do the same job and starts asking whether they ever needed to.

That changes where I look for efficiency. A slower machine is not automatically a weaker participant if its role fits the layer it occupies. Execution, verification, storage, and coordination begin to separate. Different hardware no longer competes inside one benchmark. It competes inside one workflow. That is a very different economic question.

I keep circling back to one thought.

"The network is not standardizing hardware. It is standardizing responsibility."

That feels subtle, but it changes incentives. Operators may optimize for reliability within their role instead of chasing identical specifications. Compatibility stops being inherited from the hardware itself and starts emerging from how each layer hands work to the next.

Maybe that creates a more resilient network. Or maybe it introduces new coordination costs that only appear once activity becomes unpredictable. I am not sure which pressure wins. I only know the problem no longer looks like hardware alone. It looks like economics quietly replacing engineering.
