Over $500M Lost in Memecoin Rug Pulls and Scams in 2024: A Wake-Up Call for Crypto Investors

In 2024, more than $500 million was lost to memecoin rug pulls and scams, according to a report by crypto intelligence platform Merkle Science. The majority of these scams relied on social engineering, with hackers using impersonation and manipulation to gain access to high-profile individuals’ social media accounts. Once they had control, these attackers would promote fraudulent tokens, leading to massive financial losses.

The most notorious case involved hackers compromising the X (formerly Twitter) account of French football star Kylian Mbappé. Using his account, scammers shared a link to a fake memecoin, which saw its market cap surge to a staggering $460 million before the rug pull occurred. Another major incident targeted the 35.7 million followers of music artist Wiz Khalifa, where a fraudulent WIZ token reached a $3.4 million market cap before plummeting to zero.

These attacks are no longer just random opportunistic efforts; they have become highly organized operations designed to exploit the trust of millions. Robert Whitaker, director of law enforcement affairs at Merkle Science, warned that hackers are now targeting not just wallets or exchanges but also the reputations of celebrities and tech leaders to manipulate markets in real time.

The findings from Merkle Science indicate that 75% of all social engineering attacks took place on X, while 19% occurred on YouTube. In addition, 44% of these scams led to rug pulls, while phishing attacks were also responsible for another 44%.

As crypto continues to grow in popularity, these kinds of scams pose a serious risk to investors, especially when they involve well-known figures. It's a stark reminder for the crypto community to stay vigilant and skeptical of any investment opportunity promoted through social media, particularly from accounts that might have been compromised.

Stay cautious, stay informed, and protect your investments.
