Here's what happened when the world's largest stablecoin packed up and left Bitcoin, only to start planning its return more than ten years later.

Every trader has felt the sting of $USDT stuck on an expensive or slow chain while a better entry or exit sits right there. You either overpay in fees or watch the market move without you.

USDT launched on $BTC through Omni Layer back in 2014 because that was the only real network around. Slow blocks and rising fees from 2017 to 2019 forced the move to Ethereum. Tron then became the cheap transfer highway after 2019 and soaked up most of the volume.

Tether ended Omni support in 2023 and USDT on Bitcoin was finished. In October 2026 Utexo starts issuing it again under a Tether licence using RGB. Paolo Ardoino called it coming home, and RGB is supposed to fix the fee and speed problems that killed the first version.

This matches other times assets left a chain for convenience then circled back when the tech improved. If it works, the idea that $ETH will always be the default home for transfers starts to look less certain.
